Good Morning Warrior! It’s Celebration Sunday. Hallelujah!
Word for the Day:
“Rescued By Humility and Wisdom”
Text: 1Samuel 25:26
“Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, since the LORD has held you back from coming to bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now then, let your enemies and those who seek harm for my lord be as Nabal.”
Is on our menu for Breakfast this morning. These hard words of scolding by Nabel stirred up an emotional response from David; driving him toward destroying an entire household because of one person’s foolish words. However, Humility and Wisdom met David on the road; Abigail..
David’s rage is arrested by Abigail’s humility; assuming her husbands sin, affirming David’s righteousness, and bringing the offering that her husband had refused to give.
After being “arrested” by humility David is ready to hear Wisdom speak: “...the Lord has held you back from coming to bloodshed and from avenging yourself with your own hand,”.
“Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”(Rom.12:19 & Deut.32:35)
David had refused to kill King Saul in yesterday’s reading; yet today he’s ready to kill an entire household because of a few foolish words of one man. This is how we can be in a moment of anger. While we are “on the road” in our prayer or our action of avenging our self, Humility and Wisdom will meet us on the road. Holy Spirit, our Helper will arrest us; and convict us of trying to avenge our self.
Is someone angry or offended by us? Let’s meet them on the road with Humility and Wisdom. Paul told the Ephesians:
“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,
with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,
endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Eph.4:1-3). And then Paul summarizes this in (Eph.4:15-16)
“but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ--
from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”
How easily we can be led into the temptation to avenge ourselves for wrongs done to us. We want to punish the offender but God wants to reconcile the offender. At the end of the day, both the offended and the offender need to be Rescued By Humility and Wisdom. Oooh Rah!
